Rare barn owl finds home in Wayanad man’s residence, welcomes 5 owlets

Wayanad, Kerala: A barn owl, accompanied by her five owlets, has become an unexpected resident at Wayanad native Robin's home in Mananthavadi. The rare white owl, first spotted on a coconut tree near Robin's house a month ago, has now made its nest in the sunshade of their home.
The owl family was initially a curious sight, with the barn owl regularly visiting the coconut tree at dusk. Over time, Robin and his family grew accustomed to the owl’s presence, even showing it to their guests. A month ago, however, the family noticed a strange smell spreading in the bedroom, which persisted despite cleaning efforts. They also heard strange noises, similar to the sound of a snake, which kept them awake at night.
One evening, Robin and his family discovered that the source of both the foul smell and unsettling sounds was the barn owl's nest, located in the sunshade. The owl had brought a mouse to feed her owlets, and remnants of frogs and mice were scattered nearby. The family was relieved to find that the source of their concerns was the owl’s nest and not something more ominous.
After notifying the forest department, officials said that since the owl hen and the owlets were still very young, they should not be moved, as they may not survive. Robin assured the department that he would let the owls stay in his home until they are old enough to fly away or until they are safely relocated.
Robin and his family have also noticed a decline in the rodent problem in and around their house, thanks to the owl's hunting. With the owl family now settled in, Robin and his family are capturing the moments in photos and videos, cherishing the unexpected guests while they stay safely until the owls take flight.
