Rain relief for hot Kerala: IMD issues yellow alert as Bay of Bengal system brings wet spell

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert across several districts in Kerala from 10 to 12 September 2026, forecasting isolated heavy rainfall driven by a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

According to weather officials, light to moderate rainfall is expected across the state between September 9 and 13, with intensity picking up in specific regions over the weekend.

Yellow alert schedule and affected districts

The IMD issues a yellow alert when localised heavy rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is expected within a 24-hour window. The district-wise alert schedule is as follows:

September 10: Alappuzha, Ernakulam

September 11: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam

September 12: Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, Palakkad

Bay of Bengal low-pressure system

The surge in rainfall activity is attributed to a cyclonic circulation currently stationed over the northern Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Bangladesh coast. Under its influence, a fresh low-pressure area is expected to form over the northern Bay of Bengal and surrounding regions by September 10, 2026, triggering isolated heavy downpours across Kerala over the subsequent 72 hours.
