Rahul Easwar denied bail in sexual assault survivor case; ends hunger strike after court rejects plea

Thiruvananthapuram: Rahul Easwar, who was arrested for allegedly insulting the survivor in the sexual assault case involving MLA Rahul Mammoottil through social media, has been denied bail. The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court rejected his bail application after accepting the prosecution’s argument that he has not been cooperating with the investigation.
During the hearing, he stated that he was willing to withdraw the social media posts in question. However, the court refused bail, citing the seriousness of the offence. He is the fifth accused in the case related to insulting the complainant.
Rahul Easwar was earlier shifted to the special cell at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital due to his ongoing hunger strike at Thiruvananthapuram Central Jail.
He has now however ended his hunger strike in jail. He informed the police that he was ending his hunger strike after the Thiruvananthapuram ACJM court rejected his bail plea again today.
Meanwhile, he had also moved a bail application before the District Sessions Court. Following this, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate postponed the hearing of arguments. The arguments were later taken up after the bail plea in the Sessions Court was withdrawn.
