Thiruvananthapuram: In a surprising development, P V Anvar resigned as Nilambur MLA on Monday after meeting Kerala Speaker A N Shamseer and submitting his resignation letter.

The development followed Anvar's announcement on Sunday that he would meet the Kerala Speaker on Monday morning. Reports had also emerged suggesting he intended to submit his resignation to avoid disqualification as an MLA for joining the Trinamool Congress. Amid these reports, Anvar met Speaker Shamseer on Monday morning and handed over his resignation letter.

Anvar, who represented the Nilambur seat in the Kerala Assembly, had formed the Democratic Movement of Kerala (DMK) after breaking away from the CPM-led LDF.

Anvar, who won from Nilambur as a Left-supported independent candidate in the 2016 and 2021 Assembly elections, created the DMK two months ago after the CPM severed ties with him following his revolt against the ruling front on several issues.

Recently, the MLA was arrested for allegedly vandalising a forest office after a protest over the death of a tribal man in an elephant attack in his constituency.
