Pregnant mare brutally attacked by group in Kollam: CCTV footage reveals incident

Kollam: A disturbing incident unfolded in Vadakkevila, Kollam, as a gang of local youth mercilessly beat a mare in foal tethered on the Thekke Kavu Bhagavathy Temple premises. The four-and-a-half-year-old mare named Diya owned by Shanavas, native of Vadakkevila, was brutally assaulted last Thursday.
The mare, usually tied at the temple during the day, displayed signs of distress even after being untied in the evening. Caretakers noticed bruises on its legs and body. On reviewing surveillance footage from the temple on Friday, the shocking scenes were revealed.
The footage revealed a group of youth arriving in cars and scooters, using long sticks to beat the mare. They tied the mare's rope closely onto a coconut tree, immobilising it while others relentlessly struck it with sticks and kicks with one person seen repeatedly kicking the mare's chest.
An examination at Thevally District Veterinary Center confirmed severe swelling on the mare's chest and legs, along with injuries above its eyes and face. Further details of the pregnant mare's condition were unavailable due to a technical issue with the hospital's scanning system.
A complaint has been lodged at the Eravipuram police station under the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Kollam, listing the names of the local youth involved in the assault.
