Police yet to question accused in impersonation row at Kattakkada college

Thiruvananthapuram: As controversies surrounding the SFI leaders of Maharaja's College heat up political debates in Kerala, the police probe into the alleged impersonation row in the Kerala University students’ union election came to a standstill.

Kattakkada Christian College replaced Anakha, an elected candidate, with SFI leader Visakh as a University Union Councillor (UUC) on the list submitted to the university for the university union election. Following the controversy, SFI suspended Visakh from the organisation. The college principal also faced official action as he was responsible for the matter. He was an office-bearer of a Congress-affiliated teachers’ union.

Police registered a case based on a complaint filed by the university registrar. However, the police are yet to question the two accused, GJ Shaiju and Visakh. Further, Anakha's statement is not recorded. 

Police also said that they record arrests only after collecting case documents. Interestingly, police registered a case for non-bailable offences, including impersonation, forgery and cheating. Therefore, it is still unclear what prevented the investigating team from taking the accused into custody.

Meanwhile, CPM is criticised for hampering police investigation to secure bail for Visakh.
