‘Juice Jacking’ alert in Palakkad: Police warn of data theft at public charging points

Palakkad: Authorities in Pattambi, Palakkad, have cautioned the public about a new form of cyber fraud known as ‘Juice Jacking’. The scam involves stealing users’ personal data through infected charging cables at public charging points.

According to police, scammers replace regular charging cables at public stations with “malware cables” that appear genuine. When users plug in their phones, these cables can transfer malware or extract sensitive data such as banking details, contact lists, and photos.

What is ‘Juice Jacking’?

‘Juice Jacking’ is a cyberattack in which hackers compromise public USB charging stations to steal data or install malware on connected devices like smartphones and tablets.

How it works:

• Compromised ports: Hackers tamper with public USB ports in locations such as airports, malls, or cafes to install malicious software or hardware.
• Data theft: When a phone is plugged in, attackers can extract sensitive data including passwords, banking details, and contacts.
• Malware installation: Hackers can install malicious software that enables spying, ransomware attacks, or remote access to personal data.

How to protect yourself

Cybersecurity experts recommend the following steps to stay safe:

• Use your own equipment: Always carry your own power bank, charger, and cable. Avoid using public USB charging stations.
• Use a USB data blocker: Devices such as “USB condoms” or “juice-jack defenders” block data transfer while allowing charging.
• Keep your software updated: Regularly update your phone’s operating system and applications to close known security vulnerabilities.
• Avoid unknown accessories: Never use charging cables or power banks left behind in public areas.
• Be cautious of prompts: Ignore or decline suspicious prompts when connecting to an unfamiliar USB port.
• Use AC outlets: Whenever possible, use standard wall sockets instead of public USB ports.

Although no cases have been officially reported in Palakkad so far, police warn that financial fraud could occur if users fall prey to this scam.
