Sultan Bathery: Around 2,000 kits containing food items allegedly meant to be distributed to woo the voters were seized by the police here.

The police confiscated a vehicle carrying the kits in front of a wholesale shop. Acting on a tip off, the police searched the vehicle and seized the kits on Wednesday night. According to the police, the driver of the vehicle said that the kits were loaded as per an order received over phone and were being transported to Chulliyode area.

The inspection was led by the Sultan Bathery inspector. The vehicle and kits will be handed over to the Flying Squad. District Collector Renu Raj directed on Thursday to find more details and take appropriate action regarding the issue.

It is indicated that an attempt has been made to distribute the kits widely in Wayanad. The Flying Squad found that two vehicles were carrying kits from a supermarket in Kalpetta from CCTV visuals.

Apart from food items, essential items like sugar, soap, etc. were also included in the kits. It is alleged that they were transported to be distributed in tribal villages. Previously, UDF activists had seized similar kits from a shop near the 5th mile.

MLA T Siddique has alleged that it was done on the direction of the BJP candidate and other leaders. He also said that the BJP is trying to influence voters by distributing things to gain support.
