Palakkad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has virtually flagged off a new train service between Kerala’s Palakkad and Tamil Nadu’s Pollachi, marking a major milestone in regional connectivity. The new MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) service, inaugurated on Wednesday, is set to become a vital lifeline for thousands of daily commuters, pilgrims, and traders, providing a convenient and affordable transport link between the two neighbouring states.

Major boost for Kerala’s rail infrastructure

The launch was part of a broader package of development projects worth approximately Rs 142 crore. Beyond the new cross-border service, the Prime Minister dedicated several key railway projects to the nation, aimed at modernising travel and reducing the region's carbon footprint.

  • Electrification of Shoranur–Nilambur Line: A 65-km stretch completed at a cost of Rs 90 crore. This project eliminates the need for time-consuming locomotive changes, ensuring faster and more environmentally sustainable "green" transport.

  • Amrit Bharat Station Redevelopment: Three major stations—Shoranur Junction, Kuttippuram, and Changanassery—have been officially reopened following aRs 52 crore makeover. These hubs now feature enhanced passenger facilities, including lifts, escalators, and free Wi-Fi, while incorporating local Keralite architectural elements.

Strengthening regional ties

The Palakkad–Pollachi service is expected to significantly boost the local economy. By linking the industrial and agricultural hubs of Tamil Nadu with the transit networks of Kerala, the service facilitates smoother trade and encourages tourism at intermediate stations.

Following the official inaugurations, the Prime Minister addressed a massive BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) campaign convention, attended by thousands of people, signalling a high-decibel start to the political season in the state. (Agencies)
