Patient collapses and dies on discharge day in Kochi; complaint filed with superintendent, inquiry committee formed

Kalamassery: A patient who was scheduled to be discharged from Ernakulam Government Medical College collapsed and died on the same day.

Halilul Rahman (40), a resident of Pulikkalath, Mattancherry, who was undergoing treatment after sustaining injuries in an accident, died around 11.15 am on Sunday.

His brother, Shuhaib, filed a complaint with the medical college superintendent, alleging that Halilul Rahman died due to medical negligence and lapses in treatment at the medical college.

At around 4 am on September 22, Halilul Rahman was riding a two-wheeler when he swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle ahead of him. He lost control of the vehicle and fell on the road. He was immediately admitted to Ernakulam General Hospital with a serious injury to his left leg.

As he had fractures at three places in the leg, he was later shifted to Ernakulam Government Medical College for specialised treatment. He underwent surgery on September 25. Hospital authorities opine that a heart attack may have caused his death.

Halilul Rahman's wife is Sharbin. His children are Aisha, Hamida and Mohammed Zain. The last rites will be held on Monday.

Committee formed to conduct inquiry

Based on the complaint filed by Halilul Rahman's brother, Medical College Superintendent Dr Anoop Joseph formed a committee comprising heads of departments and led by the deputy superintendent to investigate the matter.

The committee has been directed to submit its report at the earliest. The DYFI staged a protest at the medical college, alleging that the patient's death was caused by medical negligence and lapses in treatment.
