Kannur: Kerala Women's Commission Chairperson P. Sathidevi has rejected Minister Saji Cherian's statement that no case needs to be registered against filmmaker Ranjith without a written complaint.

Sathidevi clarified that the government is expected to take action if the allegations are substantiated, and if similar allegations are brought to notice by the media, then they would be investigated.

Earlier, Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra alleged that Ranjith, who is currently the Chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, made sexual advances towards her during the auditions for ‘Paleri Manikyam’.

Cherian had earlier suggested that an investigation could only proceed once a formal complaint is lodged by the actress involved. Sathidevi, however, emphasised the importance of conducting a thorough investigation regardless of the stature of the individual involved.

“The allegations came to light through the media. A proper investigation should be done, and action should be taken no matter how high up the person may be. If a complaint is raised against a person, investigation and action should be taken. It is up to the government to decide whether to remove the chairman. If the allegations are proven, it is not appropriate for people who have committed wrongdoing to be in such positions," Sathidevi said.

She further noted that the Women's Commission will seek a report from the government on the matter. Sathidevi also encouraged victims to come forward and file complaints.
