Kerala govt to decide on giving official honours at Chandy’s funeral today

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government on Wednesday will take a decision on whether to provide official state honours to former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at his funeral. 

Earlier, Chandy’s family had stated that the veteran Congress leader had expressed his desire not to be given official honours during the funeral. 

Following this, the Department of Public Administration asked the family about whether Chandy had written down his wish. If so, they have been asked to verify the same. The state government has also sought Opposition Leader VD Satheesan’s opinion in this regard. 

Meanwhile, in view of the demise of Oommen Chandy, a holiday was declared on Tuesday and the government announced three days of mourning. On these days, the National Flag will be flown at half mast on all government buildings in the state. 

Oommen Chandy breathed his last on Tuesday around 4.25 am while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru. His mortal remains were kept for public viewing at the residence of former minister T John in Bengaluru and later airlifted to Kerala.
