Kerala remembers Oommen Chandy's legacy on first death anniversary

Kottayam: It has been a year since the passing of veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Kerala, Oommen Chandy. As his first death anniversary is commemorated, a stalwart who dedicated his life to public service is remembered. He has left an indelible mark on Kerala's political landscape. His legacy of integrity, compassion and commitment to the people continues to inspire and resonate within the hearts of many.

The memorial event for the late veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Kerala witnessed the participation of many prominent Congress leaders and workers from across the state. The overwhelming presence of the general populace attests to the deep reverence people hold for him even a year after his passing.

His grave site has become a place of daily pilgrimage, attracting visitors from near and far. Tourists visiting Alappuzha and Kumarakom have even included his grave site in their itineraries, highlighting his enduring legacy.


 

The memorial event is being held at St George Orthodox Church in Puthuppally, Chandy's constituency. It was also his church and his final resting place. The significance of the location adds a profound emotional weight to the event. A public memorial service, featuring Kerala's Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, is scheduled to begin at 11 am.

Devotees and well-wishers arrived early in the morning to attend the church services and participate in the special prayer at the gravesite. The collective gathering of people from diverse backgrounds underscores the widespread admiration and respect Oommen Chandy commanded throughout his lifetime.

Apart from the Governor, Opposition leader V D Satheesan, MP Sashi Tharoor, MP K C Venugopal, senior leader M M Hasan, MLA Shafi Parambil, Chandy's son and MLA Chandy Ommen will attend the event.
