Poojappura jail official allegedly pours hot water on prisoner; Human Rights body registers case

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala State Human Rights Commission has registered a case in relation to a November 10 incident of a jail official allegedly pouring boiled water on a prisoner at Poojappura Central Prison. 

The injured prisoner is identified as Liyon Johnson, who has been placed in judicial custody and housed at the prison for the last four months. 

According to the complaint filed by Liyon's friend, the official poured the boiled water after he questioned the presence of a hair strand in his breakfast meal. Liyon is presently undergoing treatment at the jail hospital with severe burn injuries, said the complaint.  

Acting Chairman of the State Human Rights Commission K. Byjunath directed the jail superintendent to conduct an inquiry and submit a report within 15 days. The case will be considered in a sitting at the Commission's office in PMG Junction in Thiruvananthapuram.
