Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: The proposed statewide private bus strike in Kerala from Tuesday (November 3) has been called off following discussions between bus operators and Transport Minister C.P. John on Monday.

The decision came after the Minister assured the operators that their demands would be considered favourably. The strike had been announced in protest against the government's alleged failure to address the financial difficulties faced by private bus operators following the introduction of the Priyadarshini free travel scheme.

A joint action committee comprising six bus operators' organisations had called the strike. All the constituent organisations have now withdrawn from the agitation.

What led to the private bus strike?

Bus operators alleged that the Priyadarshini scheme had reduced passenger numbers and revenue on private buses, pushing several services towards financial difficulties. They also claimed that some operators had been forced to discontinue services.

Their main demand was to extend free travel for women to private buses as well, with the government reimbursing operators for the resulting financial burden.

The operators had announced the strike on October 27, saying the government had failed to act on recommendations submitted by a special commission appointed on September 2 to address losses in the private bus sector. They said they had informed the government about the proposed agitation on October 16.

What assurances did the Minister give?

During Monday's meeting, John said the government would consider leasing private buses. The proposed changes also include a review of bus timings and steps to avoid overlapping services between private buses and the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).

The government will also consider extending the permitted operating life of buses from 22 to 25 years.

However, no decision was reached on increasing bus fares or the concession amount offered to eligible passengers.

Which organisations called the strike?

The joint action committee included the All Kerala Bus Operators' Organisation, Kerala Bus Transport Association, Kerala State Bus Operators' Coordination Committee and other private bus operators' groups.

With the organisations withdrawing their call, private bus services are expected to operate normally on Tuesday.
