No load shedding in Kerala, tripping occurs when consumption spikes: Power Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: State Electricity Minister K Krishnankutty said that recent changes in weather are the reason behind the power crisis in the state. He clarified that there is currently no load shedding, but power trips occur when electricity consumption rises sharply. The minister also noted that Kerala has the highest number of electric vehicles in the country, which has contributed to increased power usage.
He added that the state has received 250 megawatts of electricity and may receive surplus power at times, so there is no need to impose load shedding at present. He further said that there would be no major issues if rainfall occurs. The minister also pointed out that the use of induction cookers has increased due to a shortage of cooking gas in households, adding to electricity demand.
The minister was speaking to the media after a meeting with members of the Electricity Regulatory Commission. Responding to a question on whether the government had failed in making adequate preparations, he said it would be better to ask the Regulatory Commission. He also said that the Electricity Board had expected sufficient power availability and therefore had not sought his intervention on the matter.
