New liquor policy will help to tap potential of toddy, ‘Neera’, says EP Jayarajan

Kozhikode: LDF Convener EP Jayarajan expressed the importance of utilizing Kerala's agricultural products, such as Toddy and Neera (also known as palm nectar), in a proper manner.

Speaking at a public event on Thursday, Jayarajan defended Kerala Government's latest liquor policy that promotes toddy tapping and its sale under the brand "Kerala Toddy."

"Toddy is not a type of liquor, but instead a nutritious product. It wouldn't be fair to criticize someone for drinking freshly tapped toddy in the morning, as it is not an intoxicant at that time. Increasing the production of toddy and Neera can create more job opportunities in Kerala. Currently, people visit toddy shops as though they are going to a hideout. It is crucial to modernize these shops to improve their relevance. Additionally, toddy can be consumed as a non-intoxicating drink," he said.

Jayarajan emphasized the potential for using the sector to boost industrial and tourism growth in the state. He suggested that creating a distinct brand would facilitate marketing and guarantee the quality of the toddy. Additionally, he proposed that an awareness campaign could reduce alcohol consumption habits.
