New Nedumbassery railway station gets green light; Construction to begin in December

Ernakulam: Construction of the Nedumbassery railway station is set to begin in December, with a team of officials conducting a site inspection ahead of the launch. A group of senior railway officers, led by Chief Project Manager Kannan and Deputy Chief Engineer Marimuthu, visited the location on Tuesday to assess whether the site has adequate space for the station building and related facilities.
Plans include building a station, a foot overbridge, an air-conditioned waiting hall, a ticket counter and a lift. Each department has been directed to prepare and submit sub-estimates, which will be reviewed before a final project estimate is finalised. The project is expected to cost around Rs 20 crore, of which Rs 10 crore has already been allocated. The construction will be overseen by Gati Shakti.
The land currently owned by the railways is insufficient to accommodate all proposed passenger amenities. As a result, discussions will be held with CIAL regarding the possibility of acquiring additional land.
Railway-owned land lies to the east of the existing track, while CIAL land is located to the west. Shifting key facilities to the western side would offer better access for passengers, though additional connectivity to the airport would need to be arranged. For now, the first phase aims to construct the station building on railway-owned land. As the area is swampy, the land will need to be filled and raised, and a portion of the nearby road may have to be acquired.
The project plan includes two platforms, each 600 metres long. Trains, including the Vande Bharat service, may be permitted to halt at the new station once completed.
