On National Handwriting Day, meet the skilled scribe who copies scriptures beautifully

Thiruvananthapuram: B Shantha began making hand-written copies of religious texts as a leisure activity. Her beautiful handiwork and her spiritual leanings is the wealth that Santha, a retired teacher holds most dear.

She has completed copying 13 books in four years. The books she transcribed in this manner include the 4552-page Hindi bible, 117-page Malayalam Lalitha Sahasranama stotram, Ramayanam Killipaatu, Bhagavad Gita, Gnannapana, Harinamakeethanam, Guru Granth Sahib in English, and parts one and two of Ashtanga heart physical therapy in Sanskrit. Each book was written by spending 8-10 hours a day in transcription.

She is also the author of ‘Kaalam Sakshi’ the biography of late former Chief Minister Oomen Chandy, published by Mathrubhumi Books.  

She has previously transcribed the Bible in Hindi, Malayalam and English and the Quran in Malayalam. He also wrote a book called ‘The Features  of the Bible’. She is currently transcribing the Mahabharata. 

Shantha retired from Amaravila Higher Secondary School in 2018.
