Idukki: Water Resource Minister Roshy Augustine has assured the public that there is no cause for alarm regarding the safety of the Mullaperiyar dam. Speaking to the media after a high-level meeting at the District Collectorate, Augustine reiterated the government's position on the need to construct a new dam at Mullaperiyar, while emphasizing that current conditions do not warrant concern.

Augustine highlighted that precautionary measures would be implemented if there is a need to open the dam's shutters. A special team has been designated to manage this process, with the District Collector overseeing all related activities. The minister underscored that the spillways would only be opened if the water level exceeds 136 feet, and emphasised that the current water level in the dam is decreasing, reducing immediate risk.

The minister's comments come in the wake of recent damage to the Tungabhadra dam's shutters in Karnataka, which has prompted increased scrutiny of dam safety across the region. Augustine noted that the water level in the Idukki dam stands at 2367 feet, which is well within its capacity of 2403 feet. The rule curve for the dam allows for an additional 20 feet, indicating that the situation is under control.

Despite these assurances, social media has been abuzz with concerns and criticisms. Augustine urged the public to rely on official sources for accurate information and to avoid spreading unnecessary panic through social platforms.

Idukki MP Dean Kuriakose and District Collector V. Vigneswari were also present at the meeting, which focused on both the safety and security of residents living along the Periyar River. Discussions included the precautionary measures for managing water levels and ensuring the safety of the local population.

Authorities reaffirmed that annual precautionary protocols are in place, particularly for scenarios involving the potential opening of spillway shutters. There have been instances in the past where shutters were opened by Tamil Nadu authorities without prior notification, which remains a point of concern.

The government continues to prioritize the safety of the Mullaperiyar dam and is committed to taking all necessary actions to manage its condition effectively.
