Moving car catches fire in Thiruvananthapuram, man trapped inside dies as onlookers watch helplessly

A person died after a moving car caught fire in Venganoor, Thiruvananthapuram, on Monday morning. The incident took place around 6 am in front of Ayyankali School.

The person was trapped inside the vehicle and could not be rescued. Police said the identity of the deceased has not yet been established.

The vehicle was a Renault Kwid, and police said only one person was inside when the incident occurred.

It is suspected that the driver may have tried to escape after the car caught fire, but the seat belt could have become stuck, preventing the person from getting out.

A young man travelling on a motorcycle with his wife witnessed the incident. According to his statement to the police, he saw the front of the car catch fire near a roadside post and called out to the driver.

The car was reportedly still moving when the fire spread rapidly. The intensity of the flames prevented passers-by and others at the scene from reaching the person trapped inside.

Fire and rescue teams reach spot

Police and fire and rescue personnel were alerted and reached the spot. They brought the fire under control, but the car was completely gutted.

The vehicle's number plate showed that it was registered in Kottayam. Police identified the registered owner as Titus Kurian.

Police are now trying to establish who was driving the car and confirm the identity of the deceased.

The victim's remains are being removed from the scene after the completion of inquest procedures. Further police procedures are underway.
