Kannur bus accident: MVD rejects driver’s claim, license to be suspended

Sreekantapuram: The driver's license will be suspended in connection with the Kannur bus accident in which a class 5 student died as the bus lost control and overturned while negotiating a curve. The incident took place at Valakkai near Sreekantapuram in Kannur on Wednesday evening.
After a detailed inspection of the bus, the Motor Vehicles Department has rejected the claim of driver Nizamuddin that the brake malfunctioned resulting in the accident. No fault was found in the brakes, said MVD officials. The preliminary conclusion is that the cause of the accident was the driver’s negligence.
Following the accident, bus driver Nizamuddin claimed that there was a brake failure. However, the MVD inspection found no such issue with the bus. There are suspicions that Nizamuddin was using his mobile phone at the time of the accident. It was found that a WhatsApp status was uploaded during the time the bus overturned.
Nizamuddin has denied using his mobile phone during the accident, stating that the status was uploaded later due to lack of network coverage at his school. He is currently undergoing treatment at Taliparamba Taluk Hospital.
