Kozhikode woman, daughters perform dance together to break limitations of Down Syndrome

Kozhikode: When Molly danced on the stage with her specially-abled daughters Aiswarya and Arundhathi, she was not just showcasing the beauty of ‘lasya’ along with them, but breaking the limitations of Down Syndrome.  

Their programme can be seen as a special group performance of a mother and her daughters. However, there is a story behind their group performance. 

Aiswarya can perform on stage only when someone performs along with her. So since her childhood, Molly or Arundhathi perform with her. Molly started learning dance 11 years ago for her daughters. The thought that who else would clarify her daughters’ doubts on classical dance, took her back to stage years after her college days.

“During my childhood also I did not learn classical dance. I was into sports. However, I used to enjoy art forms, especially dance. Besides, my husband was also a theatre artist…” Molly said.

The trio are learning dance from Vishnu Vellannoor. 

Aiswarya and Arundhathi have started taking dance lessons from the age of four. Their schooling till standard 10 was from Chathamangalam REC School and Devagiri Asha Kiran School. Now, the duo is working along with their studies at Thanal, a residential vocational rehabilitation centre.  

Apart from dance, the two are good at athletics as well as magic. Aiswarya bagged medals in the 200-metre sprint and shot put, while Arundhathi won medals in   200-metre and 400-metre sprints in the Kerala State Athletics Meet held in Thiruvananthapuram in 2016.  

Both of them will take part in the India International Down Syndrome Conference which is being held in September since the year 2022.
