MLA funds to be used to buy new KSRTC buses; Kerala government grants approval

The government has issued an order granting special permission to use MLA funds to purchase new buses for the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), aimed at modernising its fleet and improving public transport facilities.

Many routes are currently being operated with buses that have exceeded their service life, creating major difficulties. Against this backdrop, the Finance Department has issued an order allowing the use of MLA funds to purchase new buses, subject to strict conditions. Under the 2026-27 Legislative Assembly Constituency Asset Development Scheme, each MLA can purchase a maximum of three buses.

Under the new scheme, the seating capacity, body type and fuel category of the buses will be finalised in consultation with KSRTC. Routes will be planned based on the specific requirements of passengers in each constituency and nearby areas. The order also requires MLAs to submit to the KSRTC managing director, by September 30, a list detailing the total cost of the buses, including taxes and registration charges.

Once the scheme is completed across the state's 140 constituencies, around 400 new buses are expected to be added to the KSRTC fleet. The move is expected to help address KSRTC's challenges to some extent. Replacing old, overaged buses with new ones is also expected to improve public transport services.
