Renowned Malayalam author K.R. Meera has asserted that a writer’s political stance inevitably resonates in their literary works. In a detailed Facebook post, she defended the right of writers to express their political views, arguing that literature and social change have always been intertwined.

Meera stated, "A writer’s politics will echo in their writing. My political views and positions are present in my works. Whether or not to publicly declare one’s political stance is a decision that rests solely with the writer."

She pushed back against those who claim "writers should not engage in politics," emphasising that throughout history, writers and their works have been driving forces behind political and social transformations. "This will continue to be the case," she added.

Democracy and Freedom of Expression

Meera stressed that in a democratic system, no one has the authority to deny writers the right to support a political party—nor can they be forced to do so. "Those who mock writers for openly expressing their opinions are not true believers in democracy," she remarked.

She also made it clear that her literature, politics, and personal life are guided by the principle of "full citizenship for women, transgender individuals, and all minorities."

Opposition to Fascism and Misogyny

The award-winning writer firmly believes that "one cannot combat religious communalism, casteism, minority oppression, or the monstrous face of fascism while upholding misogyny."

She declared that she would only support political parties and individuals who actively reject misogyny—whether overtly or covertly—and demonstrate a commitment to gender justice. "Misogyny is the starting point of all forms of fascism," she said, inviting like-minded individuals to stand with her.

Criticism of Regressive Forces

Meera expressed her intention to distance herself from individuals and parties that disregard democratic principles, dismiss progressive ideals, and drag society backward.

"By staying silent, one can remain everyone’s favourite. But I never fear to speak out," she wrote.

However, she expressed hope for the younger generation, saying, "I see a new generation dreaming of a better world. At least they deserve a chance to experience true democracy."

A Lesson from Tagore

Quoting Rabindranath Tagore’s famous line—"If no one heeds your call, walk alone"—Meera reinforced her resolve to stand by her convictions. She noted that this song was banned during the Emergency, underscoring the enduring power of dissent.

K.R. Meera’s post has sparked discussions on the role of writers in politics, reaffirming the idea that literature and activism are inseparable in the fight for a just society.
