Mint leaves at Rs 140/kg in Kerala, tomatoes, green beans hit century

The supply of vegetables to Kerala has been disrupted as incessant rains have resulted in crop loss in regions like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. This in turn has caused the prices to skyrocket in the state.

Mint leaves widely used in the preparation of rasam and biriyani is trading at Rs 140/kg. While tomato and green beans prices have breached Rs 100/kg mark.

The price of other widely used vegetables (for 1 kg) are as follows:

• Yardlong bean: Rs 90
• Bitter melon: Rs 70
• Cabbage: Rs 40
• Beetroot: Rs 50  

The increase in vegetable prices will badly impact kitchen budget. Similarly it has disrupted the functioning of hotels and eateries. The operational cost of these food outlets has increased by 65 per cent, say reports.
