From Manju Warrier to Guinness Pakru: Exploring the stars discovered at Kerala School Kalolsavam

In today's world, social media and reality shows quickly make young talents famous. A viral video or post can bring instant recognition. But for many years, the Kerala State School Youth Festival (Kerala School Kalolsavam) was the key platform that introduced young talents to the world. As the 63rd edition of this festival takes place in Thiruvananthapuram, it's a good time to look back at the many famous figures it has helped bring into the spotlight.
A Stage for Future Stars
The Kerala School Kalolsavam has played a big role in shaping the state's cultural scene. Many people who once performed on its stage have gone on to become famous in Kerala's entertainment and cultural world. Actors like Manju Warrier and Divya Unni, along with singers like KJ Yesudas, Jayachandran, and KS Chitra, all made their mark at the festival.
In the second edition of the festival, KJ Yesudas won in the light music category, and P Jayachandran took first place in Mridangam. The 1978 festival in Thrissur was especially memorable, as it introduced KS Chitra, who won first place in singing, and later became one of the most loved playback singers in Kerala.
Kalolsavam's Link to Cinema and Theatre
The festival has also been a key place for finding future stars of Malayalam cinema. Many film directors discovered talented actors and actresses at the festival, and many performers later built successful careers in the film industry.
The Kalathilakam (best female performer) and Kalarathibha (best male performer) awards were once a highlight of the festival. However, over time, these awards caused unhealthy competition and disputes among teachers and participants. As a result, the government removed these awards and replaced them with a grading system, aiming to reduce conflict and maintain fairness.
Divya Unni, who was crowned Kalathilakam in 1990, went on to become a popular actress. Manju Warrier, who won the same title in 1992 and 1995, is now a household name. Her dance performances in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi, and folk dance helped her become a dancer before making her mark as an actress.
Other famous figures who got their start at the festival include Kavya Madhavan, Ambili Devi, and Navya Nair, all of whom became successful actors. Muthumani, a well-known theatre artist, also began her journey at the Kalolsavam, eventually starring in popular Malayalam films.
More Talents from Kalolsavam
Many other famous names came from the festival, including actors like Vineeth Kumar, Vineeth Sreenivasan, and Vindhuja Menon, all of whom made their mark in Malayalam cinema. Jomol, who made her film debut in Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha made journey to fame through the festival. Ajay Kumar, known as Guinness Pakru, initially missed the Kalaprathibha title at Tirur Kalolsavam. After a rocky start, he honed his skills in kathaprasangam, mimicry, and mono-acting, becoming a popular Kalolsavam performer
Hidden Talents and Future Stars
While many talents found fame, it’s important to remember that many others did not make it big. However, the festival continues to serve as an important stage for discovering new talent, ensuring Kerala's cultural legacy stays strong.
