Mangaluru mob lynching: Congress leaders provide ₹15 lakh aid, assure legal support to victim’s family

Mangaluru: Senior Congress leaders met the family of Mohammed Ashraf, the victim of the recent mob lynching at Kudupu in Mangaluru, here and announced financial assistance and legal support in the case.

The delegation comprised Karnataka Assembly Speaker U T Khader, Minority Welfare Minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan, AICC secretary B K Hariprasad, Chief Minister’s political secretary Naseer Ahmed and party leaders from Kerala G A Bava, Nasir Vengara and Manjeswaram MLA A K M Ashraf. The visit came following directions from AICC general secretary and Kerala MP K C Venugopal.

During the visit, the leaders assured the family that the State Government would appoint a special public prosecutor to handle the case. They also discussed the possibility of compensation under the provisions of the anti-lynching law.

As immediate financial support, Zameer Ahmed Khan contributed ₹10 lakh from his personal account and Speaker U T Khader handed over ₹5 lakh to the family.

Mohammed Ashraf, a ragpicker from Kerala, was fatally assaulted by a mob at Kudupu in Mangaluru on April 27. The incident had sparked controversy with accusations of police negligence and demands for a fair investigation.
