Mananthavady: A roadside vendor selling vegetables on a pushcart was killed after a police jeep hit him at Valliyoorkkavu here. The deceased has been identified as 65-year-old Sreedharan, a resident of Thottunkal, Valliyoorkkavu.

The jeep, belonging to the Ambalavayal Police, was taking an accused from Kannur when it lost control, overturned and crashed into a banyan tree. Three police officers and the accused sustained injuries in the accident.

The incident occurred around 3 pm while the accused was being taken to court in connection with a theft case. The police vehicle lost control near the Valliyoorkkavu temple, overturned and moved forward before hitting the vendor.

Locals alleged that the police jeep was speeding at the time of the accident.

Residents blocked the removal of the vehicle from the crash site, insisting that it should not be moved until the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) arrived.

Sreedharan’s body has been shifted to the mortuary at Mananthavady Medical College.
