Malayattoor quarry blast: Case booked against owner, manager

Kochi: In connection with the quarry blast in Malayattoor which resulted in the death of 2 workers, the police have charged a case for homicide against quarry owner Robinson and manager Benny. Cases for illegal possession of explosives has also been imposed on them.
The gunpowder was kept in a building where the spare parts of vehicles was stored. Two labourers also were accommodated here. According to the authorities, the quarry owner did not have license to store gunpowder in this building.
The quarry owners were granted license to keep gunpowder in another building which is situated 3 kilometres away from the quarry. Apart from police, revenue department also have announced probe into the incident. Tehsildar is in charge of the probe.
The blast occurred in a building close to a quarry at Illithode in Malayattoor in the wee hours of Monday. Two labourers hailing from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were killed in the mishap. The building where they were staying was totally destroyed under the impact of the explosion. The debris was thrown away and the trees on the premises were uprooted.
The body of one of the deceased was shifted to a private hospital in Angamaly. The body of the Karnataka native worker was subjected to inquest on the spot and taken for post-mortem. Aluva rural SP Karthik and others arrived at the place.
