Leopard tooth row: Forest Dept begins probe against Suresh Gopi for alleged Wildlife Act violation

Thrissur: The Forest Department has initiated a preliminary investigation into a complaint that Union Minister and actor Suresh Gopi was seen wearing a necklace allegedly containing leopard tooth, which would be a violation of the Wildlife Protection Act.

The complaint was filed by A A Muhammed Hashim, a native of Vadanappally and the State General Secretary of the INTUC youth wing. The department has issued a notice to Hashim, directing him to appear before the Pattikkad Range Forest Officer on July 21. He has also been asked to present any supporting evidence in his possession. 

The controversy surrounding Suresh Gopi emerged in the wake of the  arrest of rapper Vedan (Hirandas Murali) in a separate leopard tooth case. Hashim’s complaint includes visual evidence of Suresh Gopi allegedly wearing a leopard tooth necklace. The complaint, initially submitted to the State Police Chief, was subsequently forwarded to the Forest Department.

Hashim contends that Suresh Gopi’s actions constitute a clear violation of the Wildlife Protection Act. He further argues that the minister must explain the origin of the alleged leopard tooth necklace. A person who has taken an oath to uphold the Constitution and the law cannot be seen violating it. This is a serious dereliction of duty, the complaint reads.

As per the Wildlife Protection Act, the tiger is listed under Part II of Schedule I, affording it the highest level of protection. The possession of leopard parts, including teeth, is strictly prohibited, even if they are inherited.
