Leopard falls into 15-m well near Kerala’s Koodaranji; Rescue underway

Kozhikode (Kerala) A leopard that accidentally fell into a 15-metre-deep dry well near Koodaranji in Kozhikode, Kerala, two days ago has now been identified, according to Forest officials. The rescue mission to safely retrieve the big cat is currently underway.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday when the leopard slipped into an uncovered, unused well near a forested area, a senior Forest Department official said.

At first, it was difficult to determine the animal's species, as it remained hidden in a small cave within the well.

“Cameras were set up, and it was identified as a leopard when it walked out of the cave on Friday evening,” the official confirmed.

With the species now confirmed, the Forest Department launched a rescue operation to safely take the animal out.

“We have lowered a cage with bait inside the well. If the leopard does not walk into the cage, we will consider tranquilising it and bringing it out,” the official added.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the animal is rescued without harm.
