Nenmara: The leopard that was chased away by Rocky without flinching, despite being bitten, has finally been trapped in a cage set by the Forest Department. The leopard, which had spread fear among residents, was caught in a cage installed at a private plantation in Allichottu, Vithanassery, below Avanad Hill in Nenmara.

On December 23, CCTV footage captured visuals of a leopard arriving at the house of Sashi in Athimattam, Vithanassery, to attack a pet dog. The footage showed the leopard attempting to attack the dog named Rocky, a Rottweiler, and engaging in a fight with it before retreating and running away. Following this incident, anticipating the leopard’s return, the Forest Department installed a cage and surveillance cameras in the rubber plantation adjacent to the house.

The leopard was trapped in the cage early Saturday morning. By around 8 am, a team led by the Nelliampathy Range Officer arrived and shifted the leopard to the Pothundi Section Office. It was later moved to the Forest Department Section Office at Nelliampathy. The leopard was examined by a Forest Department veterinary surgeon, David Abraham, who arrived from Thrissur. The animal had sustained minor injuries while attempting to escape from the cage.

After examination, the Forest Department has decided to release the leopard into the Parambikulam forest area adjoining Nelliampathy.
