Man attempts suicide amid land acquisition for NH in Kannur

Kannur: Huge protest was witnessed in Thuruthy colony in Pappinissery after National Highway authorities arrived for land acquisition. A resident here attempted suicide by pouring petrol on himself. Following this, a scuffle took place between the locals and police. Protest committee leader was taken in custody by police.
Since morning, land acquisition procedures were progressing here. In the first phase, the plot of those who have given consent to give away their land, were measured. Later by afternoon, other plots were measured.
Meanwhile, Rahul Krishna poured petrol on himself when the officials began measuring of the land.
Nishil Kumar, the leader of the protest committee was taken in custody for assembly people and inciting violence. When police tried to take more people in custody, a clash erupted here.
There are 29 houses nearby. 12 of them have expressed willingness to give their land for NH, according to revenue officials.
However, locals allege that the consent document was forged and by unscientific construction of road, their colony will disappear.
