Another young woman ends life after alleged dowry harassment in Kollam

Kundara (Kollam): A woman succumbed to injuries at a private hospital here as she jumped to the Kallada river. The deceased was identified as Pavithreswaram native Revathi Krishnan (23). Her relatives accused that she was tortured by the husband’s family over dowry.

Revathi was married to Saiju of Nilamel in August 2020. His family approached with the proposal. However, Revathi’s family was in financial crisis due to Covid-19 restrictions. Saiju, however, urged to conduct the marriage ceremony immediately. He returned overseas after the marriage.

Revathi informed her family about the maltreatment at Saiju’s house. She had told them that husband's relatives used to tease her by asking how many sovereigns were her silver ankle bracelet. Following this, Using the block panchayat financial assistance for marriage, her father bought her a golden anklet. Saiju’s family then started to tease her about her chain.

The last message that Revathi sent to Saiju reveals his father's involvement, said her relatives.

Saiju called Revathi’s mother and informed that Revathi is not picking her phone. When mother arrived at Saiju’s house, his parents told her that Revathy left home in an autorickshaw and they don’t know where she went. Revathi’s mother then went to the police station from where she learnt about her death.

Revathi’s last rites will take place on Friday after postmortem. East Kallada police have initiated the investigation.
