KSRTC’s new Volvo sleeper bus sounds alarm if driver dozes off; Minister Ganesh Kumar test-drives

Thiruvananthapuram: Transport Minister K. B. Ganesh Kumar took the wheel during the test run of the modern Volvo sleeper bus recently purchased by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). The minister drove the vehicle along the Thiruvallam–Kovalam route for a test run.

The corporation has procured the bus from Volvo’s 9600 SLX series, which can accommodate 42 passengers.

What are the new features?

This advanced model comes equipped with several fire safety and driver-assistance features. It includes a smoke detection and alarm system, along with an automatic sprinkler mechanism for fire suppression. In case of an emergency, passengers can exit through the side windows, which can be broken using safety hammers provided at each window.

Compared to other models, the new bus offers greater cabin space for passengers. The side curtains are made from fire-retardant material, and the vehicle is fitted with ABS and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) systems for enhanced safety.

A camera-based monitoring system has also been installed to track the driver’s condition, with live visuals transmitted to the KSRTC control room. An alarm system will automatically sound if the driver shows signs of drowsiness.

KSRTC is reportedly the first public sector undertaking in India to purchase a bus featuring 11 gears.

A final decision on the operational route is yet to be made. The corporation is considering deploying it on one of the following routes: Thiruvananthapuram–Bengaluru, Kochi–Bengaluru, or Thiruvananthapuram–Chennai.

There is no ban on travelling by bus after consuming alcohol, clarified Transport Minister K. B. Ganesh Kumar, dismissing social media claims that KSRTC would prohibit such passengers.

The minister stated that passengers who have consumed alcohol cannot be denied travel solely on that basis.

“You must remain quiet. Do not cause trouble for co-passengers or staff. If any problem is created, the bus will be taken to the police station,” the minister warned.
