KSRTC tightens checks over issuing ‘zero tickets’ to men; govt to take strict action

Kannur: The Kerala government has intensified inspections on KSRTC buses to prevent the alleged misuse of the Priyadarshini free travel scheme, with Transport Minister C P John warning that conductors found deliberately issuing ‘zero tickets’ to male passengers could face suspension or dismissal.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme in Kannur on Monday, John said the government would take strict action against those found violating the rules, regardless of their trade union affiliation.

Some KSRTC conductors had initially claimed that zero tickets were issued to male passengers by mistake. However, the minister said the intensified inspections would help identify deliberate violations.

John said issuing a zero ticket to a male passenger after collecting the fare was a serious offence. He also pointed out that the government reimburses KSRTC for the expenses incurred in operating the free travel scheme.

Minister warns against attacks on Priyadarshini staff

The minister also criticised alleged incidents involving private bus employees who reportedly obstructed or assaulted staff working on Priyadarshini buses.

Describing such incidents as "unacceptable", John said strict legal action would be taken against those involved. He added that police action would continue and warned anyone planning similar attacks to refrain from doing so.

Private bus operators' concerns under review

The Priyadarshini scheme has also triggered concerns among private bus operators. John said the government would examine their grievances after receiving the report of the Padmakumar Committee, which was constituted to study the problems faced by the private bus sector.

The committee is expected to recommend measures that address the concerns of private operators without affecting KSRTC, he said.

Meanwhile, John expressed hope that the heavy rush on Priyadarshini buses, particularly those operating to popular tourist destinations such as Gavi, would gradually ease.

The Priyadarshini scheme was launched by the Kerala government to provide free travel for women on ordinary KSRTC bus services. The initiative was part of a key election promise made by the Congress-led UDF during the recent Assembly polls.
