Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is introducing QR codes on electricity bills, making payments quicker and easier for consumers. By simply scanning the code on the bill, users can instantly view their bill details and complete payments securely. This system, expected to roll out within a few months, is part of KSEB’s efforts to enhance customer convenience.

To further improve service quality, KSEB is also upgrading its IT infrastructure and seeking suggestions from organisations to address consumer needs more efficiently, as per chairman Biju Prabhakar.

The idea of providing permanent QR codes for homes and institutions is also under consideration. These codes can be securely placed at a fixed location. Scanning the QR code will display the details of the respective electricity bill for the period, allowing for seamless payment.

Bill payments via POS machines
KSEB has already initiated a pilot project in October at locations such as Vellayambalam and Ulloor in Thiruvananthapuram. Payments can now be made via card or QR code through POS (point of sale) machines in these areas.

Financial challenges for KSEB
KSEB's average monthly revenue stands at ₹1,750 crore, while its monthly expenditure is ₹1,950 crore, resulting in a deficit of ₹200 crore every month.
Chairman Biju Prabhakar clarified a mistake in a news report published on Thursday, which inaccurately stated KSEB's monthly revenue as ₹1,500 crore.

Focus on consumer interaction
The chairman also noted that KSEB currently does not prioritise consumer engagement effectively. Plans are underway to establish customer care centres in select cities and to introduce call centre services with the help of professional agencies to resolve consumer grievances efficiently.

These steps aim to improve both the consumer experience and the financial health of the organisation.
