Kottayam’s beloved stadium dog ‘Kuttan’ loses eyesight after road accident, gets new hope

Kottayam: Kuttan, a dog who had become a familiar and much-loved presence at Nagampadam Indoor Stadium for nearly eight years, has lost his eyesight following a recent road accident.
Known affectionately among regular visitors, Kuttan had informally taken on the role of a guard dog at the stadium. He was especially close to Kannan, a member of the security staff, and over time became part of the daily routine for employees, trainees, and children visiting the venue. At night, after the gates were closed, Kuttan would roam the premises as if keeping watch.
Last week, Kuttan was hit by a vehicle and went missing for several days, raising concern among those at the stadium. Around the same time, a video showing an injured dog lying on Shastri Road began circulating on social media. The footage revealed severe injuries, with both eyes badly damaged and protruding.
During their search, stadium staff came across the video and confirmed that the injured dog was Kuttan.
Animal lovers quickly stepped in. Ajitha Suresh from Pallickathodu, a member of the Save Paws Animal Rescue team, arranged for his immediate care.
Following initial rescue efforts, Mohammed Faisal, a native of Kollam, took responsibility for Kuttan’s treatment. The dog was admitted to a veterinary hospital in Kollam, where doctors attempted to restore his vision through surgery.
However, the procedure was unsuccessful. Due to the severity of the injuries, both of Kuttan’s eyes had to be surgically removed.
After completing treatment, Kuttan has now been shifted to Mohammed Faisal’s shelter in Kollam. The facility houses several other rescued dogs, where he will continue to receive care and support.
Despite losing his eyesight, Kuttan is now safe and under dedicated supervision.
Appeal for compassion towards injured animals
Ajitha Suresh has urged the public not to abandon injured animals on the streets after accidents. While she currently has no space to accommodate more dogs at her rented residence, she assured that, with the support of kind-hearted people, arrangements can still be made for their care.
