Kerala geologist Anish Mohan missing in Sikkim tunnel collapse; eight dead

Namchi: A geologist from Kerala's Kottayam district remains missing after a section of an under-construction tunnel at the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project collapsed in Sikkim's Namchi district, with the death toll in the incident rising to eight.

The missing geologist has been identified as Anish Mohan, a native of Kottayam, who was among the workers inside the tunnel when it collapsed at Samardung. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to trace him and others believed to be trapped.

According to the Namchi District Administration, rescue operations are being carried out by multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Sikkim Police, Fire and Emergency Services, NHPC officials and the Health Department. The operation is being closely monitored by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA).

Authorities said eight bodies have so far been recovered from the collapsed tunnel, while specialised teams continue search operations under challenging conditions.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang to review the rescue efforts and enquire about the situation.

In a post on X, Tamang said the Prime Minister expressed deep concern for the affected workers and their families and assured the state government of all possible assistance from the Centre.

According to the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), rescue operations are being conducted on a "war footing", with specialised teams from Pakyong and Siliguri joining the operation alongside the NDRF, SDRF, SSDMA, district administration, police, medical personnel and local volunteers.

The teams are continuing efforts to recover those still trapped inside the tunnel.

Expressing grief over the tragedy, Chief Minister Tamang conveyed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and assured them of the government's full support. He said he was closely monitoring the rescue operation and had directed all departments to expedite efforts while ensuring the safety of rescue personnel.

He also appealed to the public not to circulate unverified information as rescue operations continue.
