Kodaly Village mourns little Aljo’s tragic death where snakes are a common sight in the hilly area

Kodaly (Thrissur): The residents near Kodassery Hills are in deep mourning following the tragic death of eight-year-old Aljo, who was bitten by a snake while sleeping inside his home. The community is in shock that the children were bitten while staying safely indoors with their father, Siljo, and mother, Jonsy.

The family’s house is situated just 200–250 metres from the base of Kodassery Hill. Locals noted that because it is a hillside village, snakes are frequently spotted in and around residential properties. Despite this, the family had kept their surroundings meticulously cleared and maintained. Their well-secured house was constructed only two years ago. 

Aljo’s body has been taken to Thrissur Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. On Saturday night, the two children had been sleeping on the floor of the hallway alongside their parents. Around 2.00 am, both children woke up complaining of abdominal pain.
The family had returned home around 9:00 pm the previous evening after attending a relative's priesthood jubilee, where they had consumed some juice. Mistaking the children's discomfort for indigestion, the parents gave them warm water and ginger juice. The children then went to sleep in the bedroom with their mother.

At 5:30 am, Anosh woke his mother. Seeing both children in a collapsed and weakened state, the parents rushed them to Kodaly on a motorbike. From there, they were taken by ambulance to the hospital by 6.30 am, but Aljo was confirmed dead. Anosh has been moved to a hospital in Karukutty for specialist treatment.
