Kochi toddler’s death: Mother confesses to crime; motive still unclear, say police

Kochi: Police have recorded the arrest of Sandhya, the mother of three-year-old Kalyani who was found dead in Aluva. Aluva Rural Superintendent of Police (SP) M. Hemalatha confirmed that Sandhya has confessed to the offence, though her statements remain inconsistent.
Preliminary post-mortem findings suggest that the child died due to drowning. Investigators have secured CCTV footage showing Sandhya walking near the river with her daughter and returning alone.
“We are not yet saying this is a premeditated murder. Further evidence collection is underway. The mother has confessed to the crime,” said the SP.
Contradictions
Police say Sandhya is undergoing medical evaluation to determine whether psychological factors played a role. “If any psychological issues are identified during the tests, further psychiatric assessments will follow as per medical advice,” Hemalatha stated.
She added that the suspect continues to change her version of events, leaving several crucial aspects of the case unclear.
Motive and Further Investigation
Investigators are also examining whether family-related issues could have led to the alleged killing and are probing whether anyone else assisted her. “The child’s relatives will also be questioned,” Hemalatha said.
Sandhya has been presented before the court. Police will seek custody for further interrogation.
