Kochi: The United Democratic Front (UDF) has made a strong comeback in the Kochi Corporation as vote counting in the Kerala Local Body Elections 2015 reached a conclusion in Friday, with the Congress-led alliance poised to regain control of the civic body after narrowly missing out in the previous term.

As per the latest trends, the UDF is leading in 45 of the 76 wards, comfortably crossing the majority mark. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) is ahead in 24 wards, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is leading in five wards.

The outcome marks a significant reversal for the UDF. In the 2020 local body elections, the front had fallen short of forming the Kochi Corporation council after the LDF managed to take power with the support of Congress rebels. At that time, the ward-wise tally stood at LDF 34, UDF 31, NDA five and independents four.

Congress leaders said the victory in Kochi was achieved despite multiple organisational challenges, including internal dissent and rebel candidates, underscoring a consolidated campaign and renewed voter support for the UDF in the state’s commercial capital.

The outcome is being viewed as a major boost for the Congress-led front in the Kerala local body elections 2025, particularly in urban centres, and signals a shift in political momentum in Kochi Corporation after five years of Left rule.
