Kochi girl found hanging at home, declared dead at hospital; police probe phone dispute angle

A 13-year-old girl died after she was found hanging at her home in Kochi, with police investigating whether a disagreement over mobile phone use was linked to the incident.
The Class 9 student was found in her bedroom within the Chengamanad police station limits on Thursday evening. Her family rushed her to a nearby medical college, but she later died.
According to police, the family used a mobile phone for household purposes. Earlier in the day, the girl's father, a daily-wage construction worker, tried calling the number twice while he was out on an errand. The line was engaged both times.
After returning home, he questioned the girl about the phone and reprimanded her. Police said she appeared upset after the incident.
The father then left the house. Later, after returning from tuition, the girl went to her bedroom, reportedly saying she wanted to change her clothes. She locked the door from inside.
Her mother, who works as cleaning staff, was at home at the time. When the family later found the girl hanging inside the room, they rushed her to hospital.
Police checking other possibilities
Chengamanad police have registered a case of unnatural death. Investigators are checking the circumstances of the death and whether anything apart from the phone-related disagreement may have been involved.
Police said no suicide note was found at the house. An examination of the girl's phone also did not reveal any suspicious activity.
The girl was reportedly academically bright and well regarded by her teachers and neighbours. She lived with her parents and younger brother, a Class 7 student.
The body was shifted for post-mortem examination after inquest proceedings. Police said the body will be handed over to the family after the examination. The investigation is continuing.
