Thalassery: P V Rajalakshmi, a pioneer from Thalassery, has carved a niche for herself in the traditionally male-dominated field of tool and die making. As a successful entrepreneur and trainer, she made history as Asia’s first female graduate in the specialised field of tool and die making, proving that passion and perseverance can break even the toughest barriers.

Rajalakshmi’s journey began in 1978 when she applied to the Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF) in Thalassery, despite the course being predominantly male. After clearing the all-India entrance test and interview, she became the only female student in a class of 30. The course, which required intensive physical labour and technical expertise, was challenging, but Rajalakshmi was determined. Out of 30 students, only 18 completed the program, and she emerged victorious, earning her degree in 1982.

Entrepreneurial success and recognition

After completing her training, Rajalakshmi worked for five years at a tool room in Bengaluru’s production centre. In 1987, she founded Triumvirate Engineers and Tooling Associates near Electronics City, Bengaluru. Her exceptional work was recognized in 1993, when she was featured in the Ministry of External Affairs’ "Beyond the Barriers" documentary, highlighting women’s empowerment. She received the FIE foundation’s National Award in 1996 for her contributions to the field of technology.

Expanding horizons: Training the next generation

Rajalakshmi’s career has spanned across Bengaluru, Malaysia, Coimbatore, and Thalassery. She worked at NTTF for two years, starting in 1998. In 2018, she co-founded Mantra Leistung in Bengaluru with her husband, A. M. Surendranath. Today, the company’s operational centre is based in Coimbatore, offering both in-person and online tool design and manufacturing training to major organisations. Her courses attract professionals and organisations, including international participants, aiming to enhance their skills in design and manufacturing. She has worked as General Manager of Operations/Training and Assistant in various organisations.

Taking note of her achievements, Rajalakshmi has been invited to be honoured at a special function celebrating NTTF’s 65th anniversary in Thalassery scheduled to take place on Sunday. Her brother, P. V. Raveendranath, is also an NTTF alumnus. Rajalakshmi’s family remains a strong support in her journey.
