Optimising 126 small hydropower projects can generate 777 MW of electricity in Kerala

Kozhikode: It is learnt that the energy crisis of the state can be solved if existing small water power projects work efficiently. If the efficiency of 126 small hydropower projects is increased, it is possible to generate 777 megawatts of electricity.

The proposal was put forward by chartered engineer Jacob Jose even as the debate was raging that more electricity would have to be purchased to face the energy crisis and this would lead to increase in electricity charges. The proposal was handed over to State Electricity Regulatory Commission chairman T K Jose. 

He points out that if the projects in the state are made fully operational within the next five years, the state will get a large amount of electricity without any additional burden.

Pallivasal Extension Scheme is the main small hydropower project with a production capacity of 60 MW. Apart from this, Mankulam, Pambar and Thottiyar projects will provide 40 MW each, and Achankovil project will produce 30 MW. Bhoothathankettu, Chinnar,

Senkulam Augmentation, Upper Lam and Vakkalar projects can generate 24 MW each.

Eight to 10 MW of power will be available from projects, including Kakkadampoyil-1, Parakkadav Anakkayam, Bavali Puzha-2 and Valanthod, Jacob Jose further pointed out.
