Heavy rainfall: 7 Kerala districts under orange alert today, several others on yellow

India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall over Kerala during the next two days.
Heavy rainfall (7 cm to 11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (12 cm to 20 cm in 24 hours) is very likely at one or two places in Kerala on July 25 (Friday) and July 26 (Saturday). Heavy rainfall (7 cm to 11 cm in 24 hours) is expected at one or two places from July 27 (Sunday) to July 29 (Tuesday), 2025.
District-wise Orange Warning (Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall):
- July 25 (Friday): Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Idukki.
- July 26 (Saturday): Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Palakkad.
District-wise Yellow Warning (Heavy Rainfall):
- July 25 (Friday): Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
- July 26 (Saturday): Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
- July 27 (Sunday): Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
- July 28 (Monday): Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
- July 29 (Tuesday): Kannur and Kasaragod.
Weather Conditions Triggering Rainfall
Yesterday’s Low Pressure area over the central parts of the north Bay of Bengal persisted as a well-marked low pressure area at 1730 hrs IST on July 24 (Thursday), 2025. It moved slowly west-northwestwards and intensified into a Depression by 0530 hrs IST on July 25 (Friday), centred over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal West Bengal and Bangladesh.
The system continued west-northwestwards at 13 kmph, crossed West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coasts between 0730 and 0830 hrs IST, and by 0830 hrs IST lay centred over coastal West Bengal and adjoining areas of Northwest Bay of Bengal and Bangladesh. It is very likely to move further west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal, adjoining North Odisha and Jharkhand during the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the off-shore trough at sea level along Maharashtra-Kerala coasts persisted. Strong Westerlies and North Westerlies are likely to prevail over Kerala and Lakshadweep at lower tropospheric levels.
