8 Kerala districts face Yellow Alert – know why the state is set for more rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for eight districts in Kerala on Tuesday (October 28) and 29 (Wednesday), warning of heavy rain caused by a depression over the east-central Arabian Sea. The system, which is separate from the strong cyclonic storm Montha currently moving over the Bay of Bengal towards Andhra Pradesh, is expected to bring light to moderate rain and thunderstorms to most areas in Kerala, along with isolated heavy rainfall on both days.
As of 8:30 am on October 28, the depression was centred over the east-central Arabian Sea and moving northeastwards. According to the IMD, associated troughs and upper air cyclonic circulations are contributing to the increased rainfall activity. The department has explained that a Yellow Alert is declared when rainfall ranges between 64.5 millimetres and 115.5 millimetres within a 24-hour period.
The IMD has placed eight districts under this alert for both days, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur. As of now, there are no reports of school closures in the affected districts, but authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and follow official weather updates as the situation develops.
