The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said the Southwest Monsoon will continue to bring heavy rain to Kerala over the coming week.

In its weather update issued on Tuesday, June 30, the IMD said an off-shore trough stretching from the Maharashtra coast to north Kerala will keep rain active across the state. People have been advised to stay alert as weather conditions may change over the next few days.

Kannur and Kasaragod are under an Orange Alert on Tuesday, with isolated places likely to receive very heavy rainfall of 12cm to 20cm.

Yellow Alerts have been issued for Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad, where heavy rainfall of up to 11cm is expected at isolated places. Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of up to 50 kmph are also likely.

Rain to continue until July 6

Rain is expected to continue on Wednesday, July 1, across Kerala and Lakshadweep.

Yellow Alerts remain in place for several districts, including Alappuzha and Ernakulam. The IMD has warned that thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are also likely.

From Thursday, July 2, heavy rain is expected at isolated places. A low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on Friday, July 3, which could keep the monsoon active over central and southern India.

Yellow Alerts will continue for several districts, including Kozhikode and Idukki.

The IMD has also forecast widespread rainfall across Kerala from July 4 to July 6, with rain expected in most parts of the state.

Schools may close in affected areas

Heavy rain may cause temporary disruption in some parts of Kerala.

District authorities may close schools and colleges in areas affected by severe weather. Any decision on holidays or changes to class schedules will be announced by the respective district administrations based on local conditions.

Students and parents have been advised to check only official announcements from district collectors and schools or colleges for updates on holidays and class timings.
