Heavy rain in Kerala: Schools and colleges to remain shut in four districts on August 3

Thiruvananthapuram: Several districts in Kerala have declared a school and college holiday on Monday, August 3, as heavy rain continues to lash the state and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of more rainfall.

Pathanamthitta, Kannur, Kozhikode and Kasaragod have announced a district-wide holiday for educational institutions, while Alappuzha has declared a holiday only for selected institutions and areas affected by flooding and relief camp operations.

Districts where all educational institutions will remain closed

Pathanamthitta

The Pathanamthitta District Disaster Management Authority has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including anganwadis, schools, colleges, professional colleges and tuition centres, after heavy rain and flooding in different parts of the district.

Public examinations and university examinations will be held as scheduled.

Kannur

Kannur district has announced a holiday for all educational institutions on August 3 due to the prevailing weather conditions.

Kozhikode

Kozhikode district has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including schools, professional colleges, anganwadis, madrasas and tuition centres, following heavy rain in hilly areas, waterlogging and the forecast of continued rainfall.

The district administration clarified that the holiday does not apply to online classes, which may continue as scheduled.

Kasaragod

Kasaragod district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, professional colleges, anganwadis, tuition centres, CBSE and ICSE schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, and madrasas and other religious educational institutions.

Previously scheduled university examinations, public examinations and interviews will be conducted as planned.

Alappuzha announces holiday in selected areas

Unlike the four districts that have announced a complete closure, Alappuzha has declared a holiday only for institutions affected by the rain situation.

District Collector Shaji V. Nair announced a holiday for: Educational institutions functioning as relief camps, all educational institutions, including professional colleges, in Chengannur and Kuttanad taluks. Anganwadis and tuition centres will remain shut.

The decision follows severe waterlogging in several parts of the district after days of heavy rain.

Pre-scheduled examinations will continue without any change.

Heavy rain alert continues in Kerala

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts across Kerala as widespread rainfall is expected to continue.

For Sunday, August 2, an orange alert has been issued in 12 districts — Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. A yellow alert is in place for Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.

For Monday, August 3, a yellow alert has been issued in 10 districts — Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

The IMD has warned of isolated heavy rainfall and strong winds reaching 40–50 kmph in parts of the state on Sunday and Monday. Residents have been advised to remain cautious and follow updates from local authorities.
